Hardwood for Outdoor Structures

From retaining edges to fence lines, outdoor timber work requires decisions about size, exposure and the intended job. Tableland Timbers Pty Ltd supplies timber sleepers to customers around Grafton and welcomes enquiries for posts, rails and fencing material. We discuss these uses together because the pieces often share a project but perform different roles.

A sleeper selected for landscaping is not automatically appropriate for every structural or ground-contact situation. Likewise, the spacing and dimensions needed for a fence should be established in the project design.

Our timber is supplied green and rough sawn, with no drying, dressing or treatment at the sawmill. For sizes outside a standard specification, read more about custom timber milling.

FAQ's

Not necessarily, because load, drainage and installation conditions differ between projects. A retaining wall should use a material and construction method appropriate to its design.

Note the intended post and rail sections, lengths, spacing and quantities. Include any changes in ground level or layout that affect the design.

Untreated timber has not undergone a preservative treatment process. Suitability for outdoor exposure or ground contact should be assessed for the particular species and application.

Matching Timber to the Job

Different outdoor applications place different demands on hardwood components.

  • Sleepers. Consider the dimensions, intended placement and exposure conditions before selecting sleepers. Retaining structures may also require an engineered design and appropriate drainage.
  • Posts. A post's size and use depend on the fence or structure it supports. Be clear about length, connection details and whether the design involves ground contact.
  • Rails. Rails connect other components and need to suit the span and fixing method. A measured layout reduces uncertainty when ordering lengths and quantities.
  • Fencing timber. Boundary and rural fencing projects can use several different components. Prepare a list separating posts, rails and other pieces so each can be discussed accurately.
