Outdoor Hardwood on the Gold Coast

Decks, fencing components and landscape projects can involve very different timber specifications, even when they are grouped under the same outdoor-work heading. At Tableland Timbers Pty Ltd, we take sawmill enquiries from the Gold Coast about hardwood for these applications as well as structural sawn material and custom cutting. Our timber is produced at the Trenayr sawmill near Grafton, with supply arrangements discussed when an enquiry is made.

The key detail is that we supply green, rough sawn timber. We do not dry, dress or treat material, so a project that needs a prefinished decking board or treated component must allow for that difference.

Start with the designed size, intended exposure and any required grade. Understanding those requirements helps keep the conversation focused on what the material needs to do.

For a discussion about hardwood products and cuts, call (02) 6644 4112 and describe the project and quantities involved.

Choosing Timber on the Gold Coast

Outdoor timber selection is as much about the intended installation as it is about the material on a price list.

  • Decking preparation. Board dimensions, spacing and surface finish should be decided with the deck's design in mind. Green, rough sawn material may need additional preparation before it suits the intended walking surface.
  • Fencing components. Posts and rails have different roles, so a single general timber description may not be sufficient. Record the required sizes and note any ground-contact or fixing considerations.
  • Landscape sleepers. Exposure to soil and water can affect material suitability. Retaining work also brings load and drainage requirements that should be checked against the design.
  • Structural timber. Grades F8, F11, F14, F17 and F22 are included in our stated hardwood offering. Always refer to the specified grade rather than selecting a structural piece by species alone.

Rough Sawn Hardwood on the Gold Coast

An outdoor timber purchase should start with an honest distinction between rough sawn hardwood and ready-finished products. Rough sawn material retains the texture of the sawing process.

Green timber carries moisture and can move as it dries. Neither characteristic is inherently a problem, but both need to be understood when the timber is measured, stored, fixed or prepared for use.

For that reason, it helps to separate the timber supplied by the sawmill from any subsequent treatment or machining a project requires. We do not claim that our timber arrives dressed, dried or treated.

Our hardwood range also includes material for uses beyond outdoor surfaces. When a job calls for cut-to-order sections or structural grades, a cutting list and the relevant design details help us discuss those requirements without conflating them with decking or landscape timber. Supply arrangements are confirmed for each enquiry.

No, rough sawn timber has not undergone the machining associated with a dressed surface. Decking plans should account for any additional preparation and the finish required for the intended use.

Moisture, ground contact and other site conditions influence how a timber product performs. Species suitability, detailing and any required treatment need to match the application.

F grades describe structural stress properties rather than overall suitability for every environment. Durability and installation requirements must also be considered for the specific use.
