Hardwood Grades and Timber Species

For structural timber enquiries in Grafton, we supply structural sawn hardwood at Tableland Timbers Pty Ltd. Our listed grades are F8, F11, F14, F17 and F22, with spotted gum, ironbark, blackbutt, tallowwood and turpentine among the species noted in our current product brief. Grade, species and dimensions all matter when matching timber to a building requirement.

We supply timber green and rough sawn rather than dried, dressed or treated. This is an important distinction to discuss with your designer, builder or other suitably qualified adviser before finalising a structural specification. If the required sizes are unusual, our custom timber milling page explains how to raise a cut-to-order enquiry.

Contact us on (02) 6644 4112 with the specified grade, species preference and dimensions so we can discuss your requirements.

FAQ's

An F grade indicates a timber's structural stress classification under the relevant grading system. The appropriate grade depends on the engineering or building requirements for the project.

Rough sawn hardwood has not been machined to a smooth, dressed finish. Further processing or finishing may be required depending on the intended visible surface.

Green timber contains moisture and may change dimensions as it dries. Storage, fixing and detailing should allow for the behaviour of the particular timber and application.

What to Check Before Ordering

Structural hardwood selection starts with the intended application and an appropriate project specification.

  • Strength grade. F8, F11, F14, F17 and F22 refer to distinct structural stress grades. The grade required for a job should come from the relevant design or building documentation.
  • Species choice. Spotted gum, ironbark, blackbutt, tallowwood and turpentine have different natural characteristics. Confirm that the chosen species is suitable for the setting and application.
  • Sizes and quantities. Having a cutting list helps us understand the requested cross-sections and lengths. Include quantities and note where a dimension is critical.
  • Green, rough sawn finish. Our timber has not been dried, dressed or treated. Plan for the handling and movement of green timber and any further processing your project may require.
